What is a gluten-free diet?

Are you on a gluten-free diet? Well, actually I am. I’ve been on the diet for a while, since last August. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol at the last checkup (both LDL and HDL). And my doctor recommended I go on medications but I didn’t like it. So I decided to start diet restrictions like cutting fatty meat, bad oil, sugar, gluten, etc. And in the next 3 weeks, my LDL level significantly reduced!

Actually, I was on a gluten-free diet several years ago for some reason. So I know how to start it. I feel better with a gluten-free diet, especially with bowel conditions. So basically gluten-free means no bread, no wheat. Rice is OK but I eat only brown rice as white rice is sugary.

But what you need to be concerned about is you lose weight a lot as you cut back on sugar and gluten. My body type is already slim so I’ve lost my weight too much. So I will start either eating more or relaxing my restrictions.

Old meets New

And our friends and we had time to go to Shimokitazawa, Setagaya recently, and check out the newly redeveloped area. According to one of our friends who used to live there, a train railway at Shimokitazawa Station was elevated and relocated. So the Setagaya-ward secured a space and redeveloped it into a new shipping & dining area called “reload“. They also refined the existing area. New shops came up and some old businesses are still there. Old and New meet in the same town.

So we were looking for a place to eat late lunch in Shimokitazawa. And what we found in a woman’s lifestyle magazine “Oz Magazine – Shimokitazawa special edition” was a restaurant called “Komainu Coffee“. It’s a cafe that serves coffee and gluten-free curry! And their curries vary from Japanese to Indian.

Warm and comfortable touch

And what we found was a very stylish, comfortable interior with wood walls and motifs.

5 curries

This is the menu on the day we went in mid-March. It has the English translation.

And these are all gluten-free. Out of 5, you can pick either 2 or 3 items.

I picked 2 – Panang and Tomato curries. They are pretty good. As the menu says, Panang curry is spicy.

And Mr. Robert did 3 choices – Tomato, Panang, and Green curries.

Then our friends picked Dashi Japanese curry but it was a bit too salty. And all curry plates come with vegetables and kimchi.

Like other Indian curry restaurants, they also have mango lassi. It’s a yogurt drink with mango puree.

Unfortunately, we didn’t try their coffee. I heard their coffee is pretty good. So maybe next time!
